XU BEIHONG 1895-1953 China

Xu Beihong (traditional Chinese: 徐悲鴻, simplified Chinese: 徐悲鸿, pinyin: Xú Bēihóng, Yixing, Jiangsu, July 19, 1895 - Beijing, September 26, 1953) was a famous painter in the 20th century. for his paintings of horses. It has been said that they were more beautiful than the real thing. Xu began Chinese classical works and calligraphy with his father Xu Dazhang. In 1915 he moved to Shanghai. He traveled to Japan and France to expand his artistic knowledge. He was a professor at the Beijing Art School and Nanjing University, and died of a stroke on September 26, 1953 in Beijing. Xu Beihong was noted for his Chinese ink and watercolor painting (known as Hua Shui-mo) and his horse and bird paintings. His work was one of the first to articulate the new expressions of the new China of the 20th century. His monumental oil paintings of Chinese epic subjects showed a mastery of Western techniques.
