MARVIN WERLIN 1929-2016 San Francisco, US

April 13, 1929 – August 6, 2016 The oil paintings of Marvin Werlin explore the complexities and ambiguities of human relationships. His paintings are done in a narrative realist style that draws thematic inspiration from Greek myths and biblical texts, and incorporates film noir imagery and classical art allusions. His work was featured with many of the best-known contemporary realist painters in the book “100 Artists of the Male Figure.” A Contemporary Anthology of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture by E. Gibbons and Grady Harp. After a long career as an advertising artist in Hollywood for the film and television industry, Marvin Werlin wrote five successful novels, directed readings and productions at FirstStage and other theater companies, and taught art and writing to high school students. In 1995, he relocated to San Francisco, where he taught drawing at the Academy of Art University for many years.
